What
started as one man's desire in 1998 to revitalize youth programs in
his hometown neighborhoods has blossomed into the Derek Anderson
Foundation. An unending commitment to investing in and
improving the future for young people and others has been the
driving force behind one of Kentucky's most promising community
outreach programs - a program that has been recognized for
outstanding service by government officials in both Kentucky and
California. Through the popular and effective ASSIST programs, The
Foundation divides its work equally across three important segments
- Community, Youth and The Future. The Community Assist Program
works closely with various local, regional and national
organizations to support youth initiatives and improvement projects.
Derek Anderson plays very active roles in the different programs,
from planning activities to personally acting as mentor to
participants. The Youth Assist Program is centered on education,
sports and fitness with a variety of programs including a basketball
camp, golf clinics, college basketball recruitment assistance, and
several educational scholarships. The annual basketball camp
provides young people with a positive and nurturing atmosphere that
not only teaches athleticism and sportsmanship, but also teaches
that there are other avenues besides sports. The scholarship fund
continues to grow and plans are underway to increase the number of
annual scholarships. The
Future Assist Program is focused on providing new hope and better
opportunities for children and adults alike. Currently the major
project for this program is the development and eventual
construction of The Anderson Arena For Youth. This facility will
provide a safe, drug-free learning center where kids and adults can
come to enjoy sports and physical activities as well as learn about
computers, arts, and life. Planning is already underway and
construction is slated to begin in 2002.
