Derek was also very active in the San Antonio community. He was the Spur's spokesperson for the San Antonio Sports Foundation

While in Cleveland, he partnered with B.R.l.C.K. (Brotherhood, Respect, Intelligence, Conduct, Knowledge), a group of young men ages 11 through 14 from Martin Luther King Middle School who work to address the multiple obstacles they encounter in their neighborhood.

During his first season with the Clippers, he reached out to the Los Angeles community by partnering with Community Build, the non-profit organization in South Central Los Angeles started by Congresswoman Maxine Waters.
